Peters-Fox produced animations for podcasts 3 and 7 of the original Ricky Gervais Show. The podcasts were consistently ranked number one in the world. (They appeared in the 2007 Guinness World Records as the world's most downloaded podcast, having gained an average of 261,670 downloads per episode during its first month.)
According to the BBC, by September 2006, the podcasts of the series had been downloaded "nearly 18 million" times. As of March 2011, the podcast has been downloaded over 300 million times. As well as producing film and animation for the podcasts, we were also asked to produce titles for BBC Extras (When The Whistle Blows) as well as producing promotional work on BBC’s The Culture Show, which helped increase viewing figures by over 100,000!
Gervais, Pilkington and Merchant have been making us laugh since the early XFM shows. When we were commissioned to produce seven virals for Bo Selector with Karl Pilkington, conversations began to happen outside of the job in hand. The work was such a success that Gervais developed the animation idea into a fully fledged animated show called The Ricky Gervais Show, which was taken on by HBO.
Podcast 3 was an animation. Podcast 7 was a film shot in Wiltshire, edited in Soho London. At launch, these were viewed by millions of people watching them online. The target audience was global – it was even downloaded in the Arctic circle! The podcast was setup and delivered via iTunes and promoted through Ricky's website and the lovely people at Jellycast streamed the audio across the globe.
For The Culture Show and BBC Extras we created storyboards and animation for Gervais and Pilkington before delivering the final work to editors at the BBC. A TV First! A Pod-Toon.
